Eat your (Frozen) Peas!

Nancy, Dynamic You Fitness Nutrition Program Manager, wants you to
Eat your (Frozen) Peas!

Does this sound familiar? On Sunday afternoon, you spot a perfect bunch of bright, crisp delicious looking spinach and decide to purchase some for the new recipe you've wanted to try. You plan to cook it during the week, but as the days tick away and the beginning of the week turns into the end of the week, you find your crisp spinach has been sitting in your refrigerator for a week. Suddenly it doesn't look nearly as delicious.

Buying bags of frozen fruits and vegetables can be a great alternative to buying them raw in the produce section. Frozen produce items can have just as much nutritional quality, or maybe even more, as their fresh counterparts because they are frozen as soon as they are harvested - usually at their peak of ripeness and quality. Sometimes the fresh stuff is picked before it's ripe, can spend days traveling and might be sitting out for a period of time before you select it. One could argue, it doesn't sound so fresh anymore...

Frozen produce offers many benefits in addition to the high nutritional value. It can make cooking much easier because the prep work is already done, and requires little to no advanced planning.

To learn more about the benefits to frozen foods - and not just vegetables - pick up the handout in the Dynamic You Fitness studio this week!

Nancy is in graduate school earning her degree in Nutrition Science and will soon be a Registered Dietician. She loves learning and talking about nutrition. She also loves vegetables the way most people love chocolate. We think slightly odd too.
Check out her blog Diary of a Wellie. She has lots to share so stay tuned.
